LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again everyone!

Did you hear about the study of women who were trying to quit
smoking? Researchers followed 281 women attending a 12-week quit
smoking program conducted at The Miriam Hospital in Providence,
Rhode Island. Roughly half of the women took part in supervised
exercise three times per week during the 12-week program, while
the other women did not.

Two months after the program ended 19.4 percent of the 134 women
who exercised had remained smoke-free, while only 10.2 percent
of the 147 women who did not exercise remained smoke-free.

A year later, 11.9 percent of the "exercisers" were still smoke
free, vs. only 5.4 percent of the "non-exercisers".

Similar results are believed to be achievable by men, as well.

This study clearly demonstrates the value of exercise when you
are quitting. If you exercise while you quit, you DOUBLE your
chances of remaining smoke-free.

The study also found that the women who made exercise a part of
their quit-plan gained only about half the weight of the women
who did not exercise. So, if you are concerned about gaining
weight when you quit, start exercising!

This is exciting news for anyone trying to quit! You knew
exercise was good for you, but now you've got another reason to
get off your couch and exercise.

Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.

FEATURED PRODUCT: Citrol
http://www.quitsmoking.com/citrol/

Dr. Jed Rose, the inventor of the nicotine patch, originally
developed Citrol while he was on the faculty of the medical
school at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Citrol is an oral spray with a distinctive citrus taste. It is
nicotine-free and contains no stimulants. The principal
ingredient is citric acid, a naturally occurring substance in
the body. Citrol is NOT a smoking cessation drug, nor a
nicotine replacement drug.

Citrol comes in a handy pocket-sized dispenser about the size of
three cigarettes bundled together. When sprayed to the back of
the throat, Citrol mimics the sensations produced by cigarette
smoke. Citrol works to reduce your desire to smoke, helping you
get over those immediate moments when you want to smoke.

Citrol is ideal for use in smoke-free areas, on airplanes or
other public transportation, in restaurants and theaters, or any
other place where smoking is restricted.

You can use Citrol to complement any smoking cessation program
of nicotine replacement and/or behavioral support you are
currently using. Citrol is not a substitute for an overall
smoking cessation plan, but makes a great addition to any quit
method you are using now. Citrol is also great for smokers who
aren't quite ready to stop, but do wish to cut back on their
habit. When you have the urge to smoke just spray Citrol
instead.

ARTICLE: Words of Wisdom to Help You Quit Smoking, Part I

by Fred H. Kelley

I've always believed that wisdom was one of the greatest
attributes anyone could possess. Where does wisdom come from and
how do you get it? Well, I think some people are born with it,
but for the rest of us, we become wise with experience. Often
the experience may be painful or harmful, but if you take away
some wisdom from each of your experiences, soon you'll make
decisions and take action based on Solomon-like wisdom.

There's another way to gain wisdom that doesn't involve learning
it "the hard way." You can study the wisdom of other people, who
have been through difficulties and triumphed (or at least
learned something in the process of their lives).

Therefore, I present to you the wisdom and sage advice from
famous and not-so-famous people, that you can apply to your own
life, to help you quit smoking:

"A superior man is the one who is free from fear and anxieties."
- Confucius

Don't be afraid to quit. Don't worry about failure or weight
gain. Worry doesn't help you quit. It only makes you feel bad
and paralyzes your actions. Break through your fears and quit,
just for today.

"Every day increases the sheer weight of knowledge put into our
hands, some new power control over natural processes....Our age
is being forcibly reminded that knowledge is no substitute for
wisdom. Far and away the most important thing in human life is
living it." - Frank R. Barry

"Whoever acquires knowledge but does not practice it is as one
who ploughs but does not sow." - Sa'di

You can read a dozen articles and books about how to quit, but
to truly succeed you must turn your knowledge into action.

All smokers know that smoking is bad for them and that they
should quit. Knowing and doing are two very different matters.
Take action!

"Take the tools in hand and carve your own best life." - Douglas
Lurton

Oh, how exciting life is when you realize that you have the
power to mold it into whatever you want. The tools you need to
achieve your goals--to quit smoking--are within reach. Learn
from the success and experience of others and begin creating a
new smoke-free life for yourself.

"What a curious phenomenon it is that you can get men to die for
the liberty of the world who will not make the little sacrifice
that is needed to free themselves from their own individual
bondage." - Bruce Barton

What are you willing to die for? What would you defend to the
end? You'd probably die for your family or country or perhaps
even a stranger in need. Why then aren't you willing to
sacrifice puffing on a cigarette for your own life?

"There can be no liberty that isn't earned." - Robert R. Young

Freeing yourself from cigarettes takes effort. Plan to work hard
for your freedom and be willing to put up with discomfort and
frustration. The end result is worth it.

"Lying to ourselves is more deeply ingrained than lying to
others." - Fyodor Dostoyevsky

"The most common sort of lie is that by which a man deceives
himself: the deception of others is a relatively rare offense."
- Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

"We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves." - Eric Hoffer

How often have you said, "I can quit whenever I want," or "I'm
not addicted," or "I can smoke just one"? Begin speaking with
honesty to yourself about your habit. Human nature dictates that
we forgive the wrongdoer if only he will admit his mistakes
honestly. Be honest with yourself, forgive yourself, then make a
positive change.

"Cast of Characters

I Won't is a tramp,
I Can't is a quitter,
I Don't Know is lazy,
I Wish I Could is a wisher,
I Might is waking up,
I Will Try is on his feet,
I Can is on his way.
I Will is at work,
I Did is now the boss."
- Earl Cassel

Which character are you?

"Most of us spend our lives as if we had another one in the
bank." - Ben Irwin

Remember, this life is the only one you have. There's no reset
button, no rewind. Live this life with purpose, and value each
day. "I'll quit tomorrow," is like stealing from your own bank
account.

"Circumstances are the rulers of the weak; they are but the
instruments of the wise." - Samuel Lover

Don't tell me your excuses for why you haven't quit. If your
entire family smokes, make it your goal to be the first one to
quit. If you job is stressful, look for ways to relax naturally
and to make your job more peaceful.

"Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An
occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind, but
many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage
point. Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment; and
the view from the summit will serve as a fitting climax for the
journey." - Harold V. Melchert

As you begin to quit, you may feel like you can never make it--
you can't imagine never smoking again. Don't give "never smoking
again" much thought. Take your quitting one day at a time. Step
by step you will make it. Inch by inch, it's a cinch.

"Nothing would be done at all if a man waited till he could do
it so well that no one could find fault with it." - Cardinal
John Henry Newman

There's never a perfect moment to begin quitting. You'll never
know every possible technique; you'll never have just the right
stress level in your life; you'll never be completely ready to
quit. Be willing to fall on your face a few times if necessary.

"Man is what he believes." - Anton Chekhov

Do you believe you can quit? If you believe it, you will see it.
Nothing is more important.

"I refuse to accept the idea that the 'isness' of man's present
nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the
'oughtness' that forever confronts him." - Martin Luther King,
Jr.

Don't accept your current situation as a permanent station in
life. You have the power to change. Strive for more.

"A disease known is half cured." - Thomas Fuller

You're reading this because you know you have a problem and you
want to change it. You're halfway there! Now finish the journey.

"Great minds have purpose, others have wishes." - Washington
Irving

Do you "wish" you could quit sometime soon, or are you quitting
this very moment?

"Only fools and dead men don't change their minds. Fools won't.
Dead men can't." - John Henry Patterson

Are you stubborn about smoking? Still think it's not bad for
you? Do you believe you don't have the power to quit? Change
your mind now before it's too late.

"It is the mind that makes the body rich." - William Shakespeare

The power to quit ultimately resides in your mind. You are not a
body with a mind. You are a mind with a body.

"Anything that the human mind can conceive can be produced
ultimately." - David Sarnoff

We're back to belief. If you can conceive it and believe it, you
can achieve it.

Part II will appear in a future issue.

SMOKERS' STORIES

them email.

Linda <peewee420a@webtv.net> writes:
Subject: emphysema

My story starts out sad (I think so). I am upset and scared too.
It started around March when I was hospitalized for pneumonia. I
was then discharged and was given all these dates for this test
and that test. I went to see the doctor finally and by the way
she looked and acted funny I knew it was bad news. The tests I
had confirmed I had emphysema. I did not know what to say since
I know people who have died from this so you can understand my
dilemma. I am 42 years old and have been smoking a pack a day.
It has finally caught up with me. I am really scared since I am
having problems with giving them up and I know I have to or if I
continue to smoke I will die. The doctors have to be careful of
prescribing medicine for me since I have grandmall seizures. It
is hard for my doctors to give me anything since they have to be
sure that it does not interfere with my seizure medication. I
feel so helpless. I try really hard to get through the day
without a cigarette, I fail and get so disappointed and don't
know what to do Have you or anyone else have any ideas for me?
NEED HELP!!! Thank you ever so much,
Linda

Subject: quitting

I've smoked for 26 years, starting at age 13. Four years ago I
quit smoking when my husband (non-smoker) and I wanted to have a
baby. I quit with the intention of never starting again. After a
year and four months, when my daughter was about 2 months, I
started again. I missed it on and off the whole time, which
amazed me. Since then I have smoked regularly either outside or
in my art room. As a mother I don't party anymore so "giving in"
after a beer isn't a problem. But I am a creative person who
loves to make things and that activity is strongly correlated
with my smoking. Anyway, a week ago it was time for me to buy
more cigarettes and I just kept thinking about my daughter who
is almost 4 now. She doesn't really notice smoking yet, but she
will soon. So...I decided to give it another shot. Today it has
been a week. This time I know a little more from reading and
personal experience about the long term cravings and have to
believe that they will subside even if it takes 2 years. Also,
by enlisting this type of support, I hope to be successful this
time.

Marie Gladis <Jupitermg@aol.com> writes:
Subject: Beginner's Rant

Hi Fred,
I am all of 6 days into quitting. My girlfriend and I are both
quitting together, she smoked for 6 years, i smoked for 4. It's
a scary change right now, but it's been unexpectedly easy for
both of us. I think the fact that we're constantly there for
each other is each of our saving graces. I think our hardest
times are when we finish meals and when we're out with friends
who smoke. Especially after long movies as well, situations that
every smoker and ex-smoker will relate to. I've made a
commitment to getting fit this summer, and when i go back to
college. I bought my 1st pair of running shoes and a new pair of
inline skates, all to improve my body that, for the last 4
years, has been sluggish and winded because of smoking. I had to
quit over a year ago because of medical reasons, but two months
into it, i gave into the "one-won't-hurt" thing, and it all went
snowballing from there.

I know i quit because i don't want to waste anymore time or
money. And when there is going to be a deciding factor in how i
die, long down the line, i don't want it to be cigarettes. I
will be comfortable in myself enough not to need to distract
myself with a cigarette in between my fingers, i will be
confident enough to know that holding a Marlboro Light does not
make me look any better than i actually am. I can't wait to get
more of your mailing list. I love the letters of support and
survival from everyone out there...

Sincerely, Marie Gladis

UNSUBSCRIBE SUCCESS STORY

When a subscriber to this ezine has quit successfully and asks
to be taken off the list, I ask them to tell their success
story. Here is this issue's story:

Lisa <Lisaarchey@email.msn.com> writes:

I would love to tell my story if it could be of any help to
others. I like most smokers had tried and quit before. In fact,
I used to tell people my smoking joke which was "I can stop
smoking any time I want and I have many times, it's the staying
a non smoker that bothers me." And I am sure that I will battle
this nasty habit for a long time but I am feeling and looking so
much better and I stopped smoking at a very high stress level,
so I can't use that excuse to restart. I have actually lost a
few lbs. in 6 months, so I am not experiencing the weight gain
either, so no excuses, as before! So you ask how did I do it. I
went to my Doctor and got Wellbutrin and the nicotine inhaler. I
started the medication, which I was informed it was Zyban under
a different brand name. I'll admit that days around 5-10 were
very shaky, especially for this medicine to be an anti-
depressant, it seemed to be working in the opposite direction,
but I was in the middle of ending a 10 yrs relationship,
quitting my job and starting my own company, and had just moved
across the country to a place that I did not like. So on day 14,
I stopped smoking and started using the Nicotine inhaler. It's
the inhaler that got me over my oral fixation, it was a perfect
substitute for the hand to mouth motion that you'll miss. I also
give it credit for the lack of weight gain. Now six months
later, I am in a city I like, social life has picked up, I walk
my dog twice a day, my complexion is so clear that people
comment on it, my teeth are white and I no longer "stink" from
cigarettes smoke..which is one of the things you will notice
when you stop,it is that other people (like your former self)
actual do stink..their clothes, car, hair and mouth.... stink)
So that's how and when I stopped smoking and I can not remember
when I felt or looked better. Thank you for allowing me this
opportunity to share my story.

Lisa
